The Orchid
Society of Highlands County was established in1994 by a group of individuals that
shared an interest in growing and learning about orchids. The society is located
in Central Florida and holds it’s meetings in Sebring. The society has grown from 16 charter members
to over 250 members today and is still growing. We provide quality speakers at our
monthly meetings that give presentations on a variety of orchid related topics.
We publish a monthly newsletter and our monthly meetings are well attended with
an average of 100 in attendance. The meetings consist of a speaker or workshop,
show and tell table where members bring in their blooming plants, raffle table,
plant sale table and snacks. We also have bonus drawings for orchid plants. Guest
are always welcome and they don’t have to be knowledgeable of orchids to attend.
The society
is very active and participates in many functions which include trips to orchid
shows and growers, repotting seminars, annual auction, display at local orchid show
and a float in the Christmas Parade. We are also active in the community and offer
a scholarship to a
Highlands County
student that is or will be majoring in horticulture or botany. We have donated annual
subscriptions of the AOS Orchids magazine to our three local libraries. As a group
we visit area nursing homes, give presentations to garden clubs and at
South Florida Community College. We had our first orchid show in March 2007 and it was a great success with an
attendance of over 1000. If you would like to learn about orchids and make new friends come join us.
